US, Iran Strike Deal

The US and Iran, on May 28, 2026, reached an agreement on a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to extend the ceasefire and to launch negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme. ‌Citing two US officials, Axios reported that the deal required a final approval from President Donald John Trump. However, the Islamic Republic is yet to confirm its acceptance of the MoU.

According to sources close to the White House, the signing of the MoU would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the Iran War started on February 28, 2026. A senior US official, on the condition of anonymity, stressed: “This is an agreement to get everybody to the table. We will work out the details in the negotiations.” According to the official, terms of the deal were mostly agreed to as of May 26, but both sides still required approval from their senior leadership.

The 60-day MoU has mentioned that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be “unrestricted“. In other words, ships would not have to pay tolls while crossing the Strait and Tehran would remove all mines from the region within 30 days. The MoU further included an Iranian commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. As per the understanding, Tehran and Washington DC would discuss how to dispose of Iran’s highly enriched uranium and how to address Iranian enrichment. The two parties would also discuss sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian funds as part of the negotiations.

Meanwhile, The Guardian claimed that President Trump circulated a draft of the peace agreement (with Iran) among US allies, including Israel, as both sides try their best to prevent fresh breaches of the ceasefire. In an attempt to speed up the negotiations, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, is scheduled to hold a meeting with his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington DC on May 29, 2026. On May 28, Iran targeted a US airbase in Kuwait after the American forces hit an Iranian drone near the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the fragile situation.

US Deploying Troops, Warships In Caribbean
Politico has claimed in a report that the US has started deploying warships, troops and fighter jets in the Caribbean region. As expected, the move has fuelled significant speculation about a potential US military intervention in Cuba. As per the report, the Pentagon maintains a constant state of readiness in order to ensure rapid military response capabilities, if necessary.

Incidentally, the massive US military buildup in the Caribbean – codenamed Operation Southern Spear – began in August 2025, well before the armed conflict broke out in West Asia. Now, speculation is mounting over potential US military action in Cuba as the Pentagon has positioned significant naval and air assets in the region.

Politico reported that The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group entered the Caribbean on May 20, 2026 soon after the US Justice Department brought charges against former Cuban President Raúl Castro in connection with the 1996 killings of four people involved in civilian rescue flights. Mark Cancian, a former Pentagon official and a senior analyst at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, stressed: “The Nimitz is likely there primarily for intimidation, though it could be used in a military operation if needed.

Official reports and tracking data suggest that The USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) and its escort amphibious ships are currently off the coast of Virginia preparing for deployment. This amphibious assault ship is equipped to transport roughly 2,500 Marines.

In March 2026, President Trump warned that bringing about change in Cuba was “just a question of time” and a matter that the US would focus on as soon as the ongoing conflict with Iran was finished. He also claimed that the Communist Regime in Havana could collapse at any time because of worsening economic conditions, severe energy crises and a loss of financial, as well as resource, support from Venezuela. The current activities of US forces in the Caribbean serve as a reminder of the US President’s warning.
