Iran, US Reach Agreement On 5 Issues In Swiss Resort
The first round of peace talks between the US and Iran concluded in Switzerland on June 22, 2026, with both sides reaching an agreement on several important issues. Pakistan and Qatar, who were involved as mediators in the peace talks from the very beginning, issued a joint statement, mentioning that Washington DC and Tehran agreed on a specific process to reach a final agreement within the next 60 days. Hence, discussions will continue throughout the week, although the first round of talks concluded for the time being.
After taking part in the peace talks, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi claimed that the Islamic Republic gained a lot from the meeting in Switzerland. Interestingly, no one from the US side has yet commented on the meeting. Vice President James David Vance led the US delegation in Switzerland on June 22.

Meanwhile, five key points have emerged primarily from the joint statement issued by Qatar and Pakistan, and the remarks made by Araghchi:
Formation of A High-level Committee
As per the (Pakistan-Qatar) joint statement, Iran and the US have agreed on a specific course of action aimed at reaching a final agreement within the next 60 days. Necessary actions will be taken in accordance with that procedure which would be reviewed by a high-level committee. The joint statement stated that technical discussions on this matter would continue at the Swiss resort throughout the week while a specific committee would issue political directives to the technical discussions group.

Lebanon De-confliction Mechanism Established
The US and Iran have also agreed on a specific plan to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The two parties have decided to set up a conflict-resolution cell or de-escalation cell which would monitor hostilities in Lebanon. The cell, which would include the Pakistani, Qatari and Lebanese officials, would serve as a mechanism to ensure compliance with the cessation of military operations in the region.
Hotline For Strait Of Hormuz
Washington DC and Tehran have decided to establish a direct communication line (or hotline) between US forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy in an attempt to prevent incidents, avoid miscommunications and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The proposed hotline would also pave the way for quick exchange of messages during transit operations. This arrangement will remain in effect for up to 60 days following the final agreement.
Iran’s Gain
Araghchi has claimed that the initial round of US-Iran negotiations in Switzerland yielded “major progress” and substantial economic gains for Tehran. According to the Iranian Foreign Minister, these benefits include waivers for oil and petrochemical exports, lifted blockades, the release of frozen assets and a new reconstruction programme. However, neither the mediators nor the US have confirmed Araghchi’s claims, saying that technical-level working groups are continuing discussions in Switzerland.
Technical Talks To Continue
Technical-level discussions are currently ongoing in Switzerland to address unresolved, high-stakes diplomatic and strategic disputes between the two parties, particularly following their recent peace negotiations. These expert-level working groups are actively tackling the complex operational details required to map out a broader, long-term agreement. The primary focus areas include: Sanctions Relief, Lebanon Deconfliction, Maritime Security, and Nuclear and Implementation Protocols.
It may be noted that the high-stakes US-Iran peace talks in Switzerland experienced a volatile beginning marked by delays, a brief Iranian walkout and rhetorical clashes. On June 21, President Donald John Trump posted that the US would resume attacks on Iran unless the Iranians can keep their Hezbollah allies in Lebanon from causing violence. “Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble,” he wrote on Truth Social, adding: “If they don’t, we’ll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!” Araghchi and his delegation repeatedly vented their anger and pushed back against the US President’s rhetoric, with tensions sparking a brief pause in mediated negotiations in Switzerland. The Iranian officials specifically took issue with Trump’s threats of renewed military action and his harsh insults directed toward slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian delegation reportedly skipped the planned handshakes and a joint photo session with US representatives in Switzerland after their 18-hour-long meeting.

Meanwhile, Pakistan and Qatar have stressed that the outcome of the technical talks will determine whether Washington DC and Tehran can meet their goal of reaching a broader agreement within the next 60 days.
