Trump Announces Ceasefire, Iran Declares Victory

Hours after prophesying the death of a whole civilisation in Iran, US President Donald John Trump announced a humiliating two-week ceasefire on April 8, 2026, stressing that he “suspended the bombing of Iran” for two weeks and would begin talks with Tehran based on its 10-point proposal, provided the Islamic Republic reopens the Strait of Hormuz.

On Truth Social, the President wrote: “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE!

Trump has also provided an explanation as to why he has temporarily suspended the war, stating: “Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the US and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalised and consummated.” The President added that Washington DC “will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz“. He also confirmed that the US received a 10-point proposal from Iran.

Soon after the US President made the announcement (and accepted Iran’s 10-point proposal as a “workable basis for negotiation”), Tehran has claimed victory, saying that the upcoming talks in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad (scheduled to be held on April 10, 2026) do not mean that the end of the war is guaranteed. The Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic has issued a statement, declaring a “historic and crushing defeat” of the US and Israel. The statement reads: “Iran would fight until all its demands were met unless a political settlement was achieved. Our fingers are on the trigger, and if the enemy makes the slightest mistake, it will receive a powerful response.

Media reports suggest that Iran has submitted the 10-point proposal to the US via Pakistan. As per those proposals, although Tehran has agreed to allow safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) will maintain operational, hands-on control of vessel traffic, effectively creating a permissions-based system rather than restoring free, international transit.

The proposals involve a pause in US bombing campaigns against Iran and its allied groups. Iran has made it clear that Washington DC would have to withdraw all its troops from the US military bases located in the Gulf region and to pay compensation for the damages incurred during the military conflict that has lasted for over a month. Tehran has also demanded the termination of all UN Security Council resolutions passed against it as part of a 10-point proposal. The West Asian nation has further demanded a formal pledge or guarantee that the US would not commit further acts of aggression against it. Most importantly, the 10-point proposal includes a demand for the international recognition of Iran’s uranium enrichment rights.

It may be noted that President Trump gave Iran 48 hours to open the Strait of Hormuz on April 5, 2026 and warned of attacks, if Tehran failed to comply. Just as the world was preparing to see what would happen next, the US President dampened the tension by extending the deadline to 408 hours. On April 8, he announced that the US reached a ceasefire with Iran, stressing: “I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Long Term PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.

Later, Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, issued a statement, announcing the breakthrough in negotiations. He stated: “With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.” Sharif also mentioned: “Both parties have displayed remarkable wisdom and understanding, and have remained constructively engaged in furthering the cause of peace and stability.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu has claimed that although his country supports President Trump’s decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks, the ceasefire does not include the war with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
