COP29 Confirms Plunge In West’s Credibility & Influence

From the very first day, the 29th edition of the UN Climate Change Conference held in Baku on November 11-22, 2024 went very badly for the Western oligarchy that deploys the climate lobby. First of all, the event took place in oil-rich Azerbaijan, one of the top 10 petrostates in the world, as the eastern European country depends on oil and gas for over 90% of its exports. Its national emblem includes a flame from an oil refinery.

The tone was set in the opening session on November 12 (2024) by Azerbaijani President Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev who said: “Unfortunately double standards, a habit to lecture other countries and political hypocrisy became kind of modus operandi for some politicians, state-controlled NGOs and fake news media in some Western countries.” He referred to the fact that the EU contracted with Azerbaijan in July 2022 to double its gas deliveries to Europe in an attempt to reduce dependency on the Russian gas supply.

Oil and gas, President Aliyev went on to say, are “a gift of the God”, just the same as any other natural resource. “Countries should not be blamed for having them and should not be blamed for bringing these resources to the market because the market needs them. The people need them,” he told the audience.

Hanging over the entire proceedings, of course, is the fact that Donald Trump is all set to become the next President of the US, and he has promised to take the country out of the Paris Agreement altogether.

All these have the infamous Club of Rome frantically seeking other vehicles to implement its depopulation agenda. Thus, it published an open letter on November 15, calling for a fundamental overhaul of the COP. The letter, signed among others by former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, states that the current policy framework of the COP “simply cannot deliver the change at exponential speed and scale, which is essential to ensure a safe climate landing for humanity”.

Consequently, the first measure they suggested was to bar countries from hosting that would not support the phase out of fossil fuels! They also proposed to set up a stronger policing system, which they called “mechanisms to hold countries accountable for their climate targets and commitments”. The other reforms were also a reflection of their loss of control over the future global system.

The main focus of the conference this year was the financing of the environmental goals set out in the 28 previous galas, that have not made the planet any safer, but certainly have made energy unaffordable in many parts of the globe, including in Europe and the US. The big question is: Where should the financing come from? Many impressive promises had been made in the past, but the initiative failed to testify to any developing nation. They have never made a serious attempt to materialise those promises.
