US President Donald John Trump posted an image of the Strait of Hormuz, labelled Trump Strait, on his Truth Social account on September 26, 2026, immediately after rejecting a deal proposed by Iran to open the waterway within a week, if Washington DC meets certain conditions.

In recent times, the US President has repeatedly claimed control over the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to declare the vital shipping waterway US territory. However, Iran has dismissed his claim, stating that a territory cannot be captured on social media. So far, there has been no reaction from the Islamic Republic regarding President Trump’s latest claim.

Citing a White House statement, the Associated Press (AP) reported on September 25, 2026 that US officials were holding positive and constructive discussions with mediators aimed at resolving the conflict in West Asia. However, President Trump has privately rejected Iran’s proposed seven-day peace plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

After attending the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on September 25, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi detailed a plan to the press outside the UN Security Council, stressing that it had been conveyed to Washington DC through Qatar. “The seven-day timeline will start as soon as the US accepts this plan,” he stated.

According to Araghchi, the initial steps would take four-five days and Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the sixth day. Referring to Iran’s nuclear programme, the Foreign Minister stressed: “On day seven, the talks with the US will be started for the final deal on mutually agreed subjects.”

Araghchi also informed the press that Washington DC would have to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports under the plan, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, release an estimated USD 12 billion in frozen Iranian assets and observe a ceasefire covering the region, including Lebanon and Yemen. In return, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Just hours after Araghchi’s remark, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources close to the White House, reported that the US President rejected Iran’s proposed seven-day ceasefire, as well as the peace plan.

Commenting on Iran’s proposal, Trump said: “And what they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait. You know why? Because they’re dying. You know why they’re dying? Because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait.” He added: “So they outsmarted themselves. They said, ‘Let’s close it and cause a problem for the world.’ And then I came along, and we put up the greatest blockade ever in military history. It’s a wall of steel, and we put it up, and guess what? They don’t have any money now, because they wanted to close the strait, and I said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to close it on you, but everybody else is able to use it’.” The President told the press: “They (Iran) want to reach an agreement to quickly open the Strait of Hormuz, because they are facing devastating losses. And we are winning.”

Meanwhile, the US President remains sceptical of Tehran’s commitments and reportedly expects the US Forces to resume bombing campaigns following the upcoming midterm elections. In such a situation, President Trump’s new social media post has become the focal point of discussions in diplomatic circles yet again.
