Facts, Pacts & Acts…

The day he became the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump adopted the ‘United States First’ policy and tried his best to maintain a consistency with this policy while preparing policies for different sectors, that day on. As far as the Paris Climate Agreement is concerned, President Trump said that the accord, drafted on November 30 – December 12, 2015 in Le Bourget, would not benefit the US Economy… in spite of knowing the fact that China and India are benefiting from the Agreement, the US signed the Accord and increased its expenditure, added the President.
It is to be noted that the Administration of former US President Barack Obama had signed the Paris Climate Deal in December 2015, and agreed to reduce the amount of Greenhouse Gas emissions by 26-28% in the next decade (or by 2025). The Obama Administration also decided to lower the number of the Thermal Power Plants in the coming years. However, the current US President cancelled the second decision (made by the Obama Administration) three years back!

President Trump openly declared that the Global Warming was nothing but a propaganda spread by the corporate lobbies as plotted by China. He also said that Paris Deal would never serve the US’ interests. The US President’s view disheartened the Indian and US aerospace scientists, as they became unsure about the future of artificial satellites built jointly by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and NASA, for monitoring climate changes. Perhaps, the US President will no longer be interested in sanctioning funds for environmental research!
No one can deny the fact that the developed nations are responsible for Global Warming. However, the poor Third World nations suffer the most due to long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system! That was why the signatories of the Paris Climate Deal had come to the conclusion that the rich nations would provide financial support to the poor countries in an attempt to help the latter get rid of the crisis! At that time, President Obama had assured the world that the US would contribute USD 3 billion to the Green Climate Fund. The Fund has set itself a goal of raising USD 100 billion a year by 2020. Although the Obama Administration had paid USD 100 million, President Trump has refused to pay the remaining USD 200 million…

The US President stated that “the Paris Accord undermines (the US) Economy”, and “puts (the US) at a permanent disadvantage”. During his presidential campaign, Trump had pledged to withdraw from the pact, saying that the withdrawal would help American businesses and workers. He had further claimed that the withdrawal would be in accordance with his ‘America First Policy’. Also, President Trump verbally attacked China and India, saying that the two Asian nations were responsible for the situation his country was facing. He further stated that the Paris Climate Deal allowed both China and India to ‘earn’ a huge amount of money from the US!

Therefore, it might be a mistake if the Global Community thinks that the Trump Administration would take care of the environment, respect the world order, and stop showing the muscle power! Instead, the Global Community should join hands in protecting the environment.
