A Tie-Tanic Diplomacy?

Diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in such a way that they ask for directions.” – Sir Winston S Churchill

Sir Nigel Kim Darroch, the British Ambassador to the US, recently triggered a controversy by criticising President Donald Trump as ‘inept’ and ‘incompetent’, among other things! In a confidential correspondence to his Government dating back to 2017, the envoy further described the White House as ‘uniquely dysfunctional’. Soon after Sir Kim’s note (sent to the British Government) was revealed in leaked cables, the Diplomatic Ties between the two friendly nations touched a low!
After being criticised by the envoy, the US President launched verbal attacks on British Prime Minister Theresa May, saying it is good that Britain is all set to get a new PM. He also said that he would make no comments on the British envoy’s note on him.

Although President Trump initially stated that he would make no comments, he slammed Sir Kim, stating: “The wacky Ambassador that the UK foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy… I don’t know the Ambassador, but have been told he is a pompous fool.” On the other hand, Prime Minister May backed the British Envoy, as she said that she had “full confidence” in the Ambassador. The British Premier reaffirmed that Darroch’s words “do not reflect the closeness of, and the esteem in which we hold, the relationship” with the US. At the same time, she stressed on the importance of ambassadors being able to “provide honest, unvarnished assessments of the politics in their country”!

The UK and the US are popularly known as friendly nations. However, the Donald Trump Administration has attacked the Theresa May Government for ‘protecting’ the envoy. London, too, is trying its best to control the damage! British Secretary of State (for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs) Jeremy Hunt believes that the leaked cables could not cause serious diplomatic damage between the two ‘special relationship’ allies. He insisted that what the Ambassador had said about the US President was his ‘personal opinion’, and not the view of the British Government. However, the way the cables were leaked was unfortunate, added Hunt.

The Experts in Global Geopolitics, in the meantime, are of the opinion that the Diplomatic War between the UK and the US ahead of Brexit would not be in favour of Britain! President Trump has already criticised Prime Minister May for her failure in handling the Brexit issue in a proper manner. The US President claimed that PM May had ignored his advice on the Brexit issue, thus, making things difficult for London. According to President Trump, it becomes increasingly difficult for Britain to normalise ties with the European Union (EU). He did not forget to mention that Britain should always remember that the US Economy, and the Armed Forces are the world’s best. Therefore, it’s better for Britain to maintain cordial Diplomatic Ties with the US. According to the Experts, Britain should consider President Trump’s statement as a warning, as London would require Washington’s support after the Brexit!
