Bear, Elephant & Dragon Should Stay Together
India is purchasing crude oil from Russia, allowing Moscow to use the money to wage war against neighbouring Ukraine. In a sense, India is helping Russia to continue the war. Hence, US President Donald John Trump has punished India by imposing 50% tariffs on its products. In the meantime, the US has signed an agreement with Ukraine on the basis of which Washington DC would be able to use (read loot) mineral resources of Ukraine. Kiev had no other option, but to sign the accord in the current global geopolitical landscape.
By the same logic, a 25% additional tariff should have been imposed on China for the “terrible injustice” it is committing by purchasing Russian oil. However, President Trump did not have the courage to make such a move. He has also failed to punish France, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Finland for purchasing uranium and plutonium from Russia. It shows that there is no ethics in the US President’s tariff policy.
It may be noted that the US used to purchase Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) from Russia until 2024. It no longer purchases LEU from Russia as a ban came into effect in August 2024. While the US had to rely on foreign countries, including Russia, for the majority of its nuclear fuel in 2023, the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act allows for limited, temporary waivers until January 1, 2028, only if no alternative source exists or if the import is in the national interest.
There has been continuous armed conflict globally, with no year passing without such an event since the end of the Cold War in 1991. Most importantly, the US and Western European countries have been involved in those wars. Currently, Israel is waging wars against the Palestinian Hamas Movement and Yemen. It is still unclear whether the Iran-Israel War is over. As per President Trump’s logic, an additional 25% tariff should also be imposed on those countries who maintain trade ties with the Jewish Nation in an attempt to stop the Israeli atrocities in occupied Palestinian territories.
It’s not at all difficult to understand that the US President’s tariff policy is terribly biased. Other countries could use the same tactic against the US in the future. One should not forget that the US has shown a special ability to trigger wars or to argue in favour of wars in order to serve its vested interests.
President Trump and his senior adviser (for trade and manufacturing) Peter Kent Navarro lack knowledge of Indian history and the Indian Constitution. However, they did not hesitate to make provocative statements about the Brahmanical system (a hierarchical religious and social system in ancient India associated with the Vedic and Brahmanic traditions) of the South Asian nation. In an interview to Fox News on September 1, 2025, Navarro said that Brahmins were profiteering at the expense of the Indian people and “it needs to stop”. Perhaps, he forgets that the Whites have exploited the Blacks in his country for centuries. The Americans have set an unparalleled example of exploitation by trafficking millions of people from West and Central Africa to the US. They not only transported those people, like cattle, in ships, but also threw some of them into the sea when they perished, apart from selling the African children and women to the Whites. Between 1501 and 1867, nearly 13 million African people were kidnapped, forced onto European and American ships, and trafficked across the Atlantic Ocean to be enslaved, abused and forever separated from their homes, families, ancestors and cultures. Interestingly, the US President has imposed no additional tariffs on Pakistan as his family firm has struck a crypto deal with Islamabad. Jacob ‘Jake’ Jeremiah Sullivan, the former National Security Adviser of the US, has accused President Trump of sacrificing ties with India to boost his family’s business deals in Pakistan, stressing: “For decades, on a bipartisan basis, the US has worked to strengthen its relationship with India, the world’s largest democracy – a country with which we should be aligned on technology, talent, economics and in countering China’s strategic drift.” He noted that “significant progress had been made on that front“. The Biden-era official further said: “Now, largely due to Pakistan’s willingness to engage in business deals with the Trump family, Trump has sidelined the India relationship. This is a major strategic setback because a strong India-US partnership serves our core interests.” Today’s Pakistan is a fine example of where a country’s political leadership can bring it down, making it spineless.
Now, India has no other option, but to normalise ties with neighbouring China. This is not an act of compromise, but an alternative approach… a long process of conflict resolution. If an elephant, a dragon and a bear stay together, then other animals in the jungle will be a little scared.

ভারত রাশিয়ার থেকে তেল কিনছে, সেই টাকায় রাশিয়া যুদ্ধ চালাতে পারছে। অর্থাৎ ইউক্রেন-এর বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ চালাতে রাশিয়া সক্ষম, কারণ ভারত রাশিয়ার তেল কিনছে। তাই, ভারতকে শাস্তি দিতে হবে। আর সেই শাস্তি দেবে ট্রাম্প-এর আমেরিকা। অবশ্য এই ফাঁকে ইউক্রেন-এর সঙ্গে তারা এক চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর করে ফেলেছে, এই চুক্তির ফলে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ইউক্রেনের খনিজ সম্পদ ব্যবহার/লুট করতে পারবে। ইউক্রেন অনোন্যপায়।
একই যুক্তিতে রুশ তেল কিনে চীন যে ‘ভয়ানক অন্যায়’ করে চলেছে তার জন্য তার উপরেও ২৫ শতাংশ অতিরিক্ত মাসুল চাপানো উচিত, সে মাসুল চাপানোর সাহস অবশ্য ট্রাম্প-এর কুলোয়নি। একই যুক্তিতে ইউরোপ-এর যে সব দেশ (ফ্রান্স, জার্মানি, হাঙ্গেরি, স্লোভাকিয়া, চেক প্রজাতন্ত্র, ফিনল্যান্ড) রাশিয়া থেকে ইউরেনিয়াম এবং প্লুটোনিয়াম কিনছে তাদের উপরেও অতিরিক্ত ২৫ শতাংশ মাসুল চাপানো উচিত। সে গুড়ে বালি, ট্রাম্প-এর শুল্ক নীতিতে, আর যাই থাকুক, নীতি নেই।

এবারে আসা যাক, বৃহত্তর প্রেক্ষাপটে। পৃথিবীতে কোথায় কোথায় যুদ্ধ, নিদেন পক্ষে সংঘাত হচ্ছে? সত্যি কথা বলতে, ঠাণ্ডা যুদ্ধের পরবর্তী সময়ে একটি বছরও কি গেছে যখন পৃথিবীতে একটি যুদ্ধ হয়নি! আর তাতে মার্কিন দেশ বা পশ্চিম ইউরোপ যুক্ত থাকেনি?
এই মুহূর্তে চলছে ইজরায়েল-ফিলিস্তিন সংঘাত, ইয়েমেন-এর সঙ্গে অন্য দেশের সংঘাত। ইরান-ইজরায়েল যুদ্ধ শেষ হল কি হল না, বুঝিতে পারি না! ট্রাম্প-এর যুক্তি অনুযায়ী যুদ্ধ থামানোর যুক্তিতে ইজরায়েল-এর সঙ্গে যারা বাণিজ্য করছে তাদের উপরেও তো ২৫ শতাংশ অতিরিক্ত শুল্ক চাপানো দরকার।
আমেরিকার এই যুক্তি শুধু অপযুক্তি নয়, এ এক ভয়ানক উদ্দেশ্যমূলক (তবে হাস্যকর) যুক্তিবিন্যাস। এই অপযুক্তি আমেরিকার বিরুদ্ধে ভবিষ্যতে যেকোনো দেশ প্রয়োগ করতে পারে। ভুলে গেলে চলবে না, যুদ্ধ লাগাতে, যুদ্ধের উস্কানি দিতে, নিজের ইচ্ছে মতো যুদ্ধের পক্ষে যুক্তি সাজাতে আমেরিকা তার স্বল্প দিনের ইতিহাসে বিশেষ ক্ষমতা দেখিয়েছে।
ট্রাম্প এবং তার অশিষ্ট বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা পিটার নাভারো ভারতের ইতিহাস জানেন না, ভারতের সংবিধান জানেন না।
উস্কানিমূলকভাবে তাঁরা ভারতের ব্রাহ্মণ্যতন্ত্র নিয়ে উক্তি করেছেন। একই যুক্তিতে বলা যায়, আমেরিকার কালোদের যাঁতাকলে পিষে তাদের সাদারা সব ক্ষীরটুকু খেয়েছে। কয়েক শত বছর ধরে।
বর্ণপ্রথার পক্ষে একটি কথা না বলেও বলা যায়, পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে পশ্চিম ও মধ্য আফ্রিকা থেকে হাজার লক্ষ মানুষকে গরু ছাগলের মতো জাহাজের খোলে ঢুকিয়ে, মরে গেলে সমুদ্রে ছুড়ে ফেলে, পরিবারের শিশু ও নারীদের বিক্রি করে যে ইতিহাস তারা তৈরি করেছে, তার উপমা কোথাও নেই। অদ্বিতীয় এই ইতিহাস।
পাকিস্তানের উপরে অবশ্য কোনো অতিরিক্ত শুল্ক বসানো হয়নি, তার কারণ আমরা সকলেই জানি। পাকিস্তানের সঙ্গে হয়েছে ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের পরিবারের সরাসরি ক্রিপ্টো চুক্তি। একটা দেশকে তার নেতৃত্ব কোথায় নামাতে পারে, মেরুদণ্ডহীন করতে পারে, তার উদাহরণ হল আজকের পাকিস্তান। যাহোক, পহেলগাঁও আক্রমণের সময়েও বলেছিলাম, কঠিন হলেও, চীনের সঙ্গে ভারতকে দীর্ঘমেয়াদি সমঝোতাতে আসতে হবে। অন্য কোনো উপায় নেই। তবে এ কোনো আপোস নয়, এ হল বিকল্প পন্থা, বিরোধ নিষ্পত্তির দীর্ঘ প্রক্রিয়া।
হাতি, ড্রাগন ও ভাল্লুক একত্রিত থাকলে জঙ্গলের অন্য পশুরাও একটু সমঝে থাকবে।
