Baloch Rebels Launch Operation Herof 2.0 In Pak

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched Operation Herof 2.0, a large-scale coordinated offensive launched against the Pakistani Armed Forces and intelligence installations in Balochistan, seeking independence from Pakistan, amid Indian airstrikes in Pakistan on May 9-10, 2025. The rebel outfit has claimed that it carried out 78 attacks in 58 locations in the past few days.

The Baloch leaders have stressed that they are conducting Operation Herof 2.0 in some selective districts of the Pakistani province. According to the BLA, it has increased the intensity of attacks by coordinating with the local rebels. Hence, it has become easier for the outfit to eliminate the Pakistani soldiers and Army officers stationed there. The BLA has also released several videos of its guerrilla warfare. Senior BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch has stated that the ongoing operation is the continuation of their resistance aimed at ending the “occupation” of Balochistan by Pakistan. For his part, Baloch American Congress Secretary General Razzak Baloch has claimed that “almost 70-80% of Balochistan is now out of reach of the Pakistani military“.

On May 10, BLA fighters took control of a key highway at Ornach Cross in Khuzdar for more than two hours to conduct vehicle checks. They reportedly targeted two trucks, allegedly transporting natural resources from the region. Significantly, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on that day. Next day, the BLA attempted to seize a post of the Pakistani Army in a surprise attack in Nokabad of Panjgur District.

The BLA also launched deadly attacks in the Paroom Jain and Garap areas in Kalat as they detonated a remote-controlled IED, targeting a Bomb Disposal Squad. The rebels not only destroyed surveillance cameras of the Pak Army in Paroom, but also eliminated some soldiers. Kalat is one of the most important areas of Balochistan as it used to be the provincial capital before the birth of Pakistan in 1947.

Interestingly, this rebel group has its own intelligence network. Analysts are of the opinion that military officers in Rawalpindi are struggling to tackle the Baloch intelligence officials! In fact, the intelligence network of the Baloch rebels has thrown a strong challenge to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI, the premier intelligence agency of Pakistan). The BLA recently eliminated four ISI agents in Balochistan. The rebels issued a statement, mentioning that they kidnapped the four ISI agents from a checkpoint in Ahmad Wal town. During interrogation, the detainees admitted that they were working for the ISI. Thereafter, the rebels decided to punish the four. Later, Jeeyand Baloch told the press: “Freedom fighters neutralised four agents of Pakistani intelligence agencies in the Galangor area of Noshki. They included Moin, s/o Ghulam Mustafa and a resident of Pakpattan; Huzaifa, s/o Muhammad Latif and a resident of Pakpattan; Imran Ali, s/o Maqsood Ahmed, and Irfan Ali, s/o Maqsood Ahmed (both were residents of Raheem Yar Khan).” He claimed that the Army post was heavily damaged because of continuous firing for about 25 minutes. However, Islamabad is yet to issue any official statement in this regard.

It may be noted that the Baloch rebel group openly backed the Indian airstrikes, codenamed Operation Sindoor, on terrorist bases in Pakistan. They also urged the Narendra Modi Government to support the Baloch Freedom Movement. The Baloch people were also seen staging protests against the Government of Pakistan with the national flag of India! Even the protesters shared a map of Independent Balochistan on social media, showing some parts of neighbouring Iran and Afghanistan as Baloch territories.

Analysts believe that it would be difficult for India to directly support the Baloch rebels if they want to include Afghan and Iranian territories in Independent Balochistan. In fact, India needs to maintain cordial ties with Afghanistan and Iran in order to put Pakistan under pressure. It is also quite difficult for Balochistan to emerge as an independent state, as the Pakistani Army has stockpiled nuclear weapons in multiple secret bases in this province. Hence, Rawalpindi would never want to lose the province under any circumstances.

China’s interests, too, are significantly intertwined with Balochistan, particularly through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) that aims to connect the Xinjiang region of China with Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, a key project within Balochistan. Therefore, the independence of Balochistan would be a huge blow to the Chinese investment in Pakistan and also to the Pak economy.

No matter how difficult it is to achieve their goal, the BLA has vowed to fight till the end for the independence of Balochistan. The BLA rebels have been carrying out Operation Herof 2.0 in a planned manner since May 12, killing hundreds of Pakistani soldiers so far. It seems that Pakistan would have to experience bloodbath in the coming days because of the War of Independence triggered by the Baloch people.
