Unprecedented: Israel Targets UN Peacekeeping Troops
After destroying the Gaza Strip, Israel has got involved in a direct armed conflict with the United Nations peacekeeping troops in West Asia. Reports suggest that the UN peacekeeping troops neutralised an Israeli drone that flew over their patrol in an “aggressive manner” in southern Lebanon on October 26, 2025. This is an unprecedented event in recent times.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has mentioned in a statement that international peacekeepers deployed in the southern Lebanese border town of Kfar Kila shot down the drone as a “necessary defensive countermeasure” after it carried out “aggressive activity” in that region. Although the Israel Defence Force (IDF) has admitted that it deployed the drone, it has rejected the claim that the drone was carrying out “aggressive activity“, stressing that it was there for routine intelligence gathering.
IDF International spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani stated on X on October 27, 2025 that “an intelligence-gathering drone was downed in the area of Kfar Kila“. He wrote: “An initial inquiry suggests that UNIFIL forces stationed nearby deliberately fired at the drone and downed it. The drone’s activity did not pose a threat to UNIFIL forces.“
Incidentally, the Zionist Regime has been accused of carrying out a series of attacks in Lebanon, violating the Ceasefire Agreement. Despite calls for restraint from the US, the European Union (EU) and even the UN, the Israeli forces continue to carry out attacks in different parts of Lebanon. Hezbollah, a Shiite militant group active in southern Lebanon, declared war against the Jewish Nation on October 8, 2023, a day after the Palestinian Hamas Movement’s October 7 attacks on Israel.

It may be noted that the Jewish Nation invaded southern Lebanon on October 1, 2024, marking the sixth Israeli invasion of Lebanon since 1978. The invasion took place after nearly 12 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. On November 26, 2024, Israel and Lebanon signed a Ceasefire Agreement, mediated by France and the US. The agreement clearly stated that common people of both countries would be able to return home safely during the ceasefire and Israel would have to withdraw its troops from Lebanon within 60 days. Furthermore, neither side would launch fresh attacks against the other.
In September 2025, the UN claimed that the Israeli forces violated the Ceasefire Accord and carried out a series of attacks in Lebanon, killing more than 100 innocent people. The Government of Lebanon has alleged that the Israeli forces still occupy five strategic military positions in the southern part of the country.

Meanwhile, the UN and France have strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on UN peacekeeping troops. Talking to the media on October 27, 2025, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said: “We are very concerned about the incident that occurred on Sunday in which an Israeli drone dropped a grenade in the vicinity of a UNIFIL patrol, and subsequently an Israeli tank fired a shot at the peacekeepers in Kfar Kila in the UNIFIL area of operations.” He added: “Our colleagues at UNIFIL are in touch with the IDF to protest vehemently what has happened. It’s not the first time that we feel we have been targeted in different ways by the IDF, including pointing lasers or warning shots. It’s very, very dangerous.“
Currently, the UNIFIL works with the Lebanese Army to enforce the Ceasefire Agreement that ended more than a year of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. Paris has claimed that the UNIFIL troops involved in the October 26 incident were French. The Foreign Ministry of France has issued a statement, stressing: “France condemns the Israeli fire that targeted a UNIFIL detachment on October 26, 2025. These incidents follow those observed on October 1, 2 and 11, when the Israeli Army had targeted UNIFIL positions.“

On October 26, 2025, the UNIFIL claimed that the Israeli drone flew over its patrol in an “aggressive manner“, stating: “The peacekeepers applied necessary defensive countermeasures to neutralise the drone.” It mentioned in a statement that the incident “shows disregard for safety and security of the peacekeepers implementing UN Security Council-mandated tasks in southern Lebanon“. According to the UNIFIL, another Israeli drone came close to its patrol operating near Kfar Kila and dropped a grenade. “Moments later, an Israeli tank fired a shot towards the peacekeepers. Fortunately, no injury or damage was caused to the UNIFIL peacekeepers and assets,” added the statement.
