Cats’ Trophy… Not A Catastrophe!
The Government of President Mohamed Muizzu in the Republic of Maldives has made a big decision about cats as an island has been chosen for this small domesticated carnivorous mammal! The administration of the Island Nation has started sending stray cats to Hulhumale Island from different parts of the country.
The government has also set up a pet care centre on Hulhumale, asking the citizens to visit the centre, if residents of the Maldives choose to adopt a cat from there. In fact, Malé has planned to impose a temporary ban on cat imports! Hence, the Muizzu Administration has expanded pet care facilities, apart from submitting an amended Animal Welfare Bill to the Attorney General’s Office.

Aishath Rameela, the Maldivian Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, recently said that the government amended the Bill to establish a regulated system for importing domesticated animals into the Maldives. She stressed that all stray cats were being relocated to the pet care facility on Hulhumale, a reclaimed island located south of North Malé, from where residents could adopt cats.
The minister mentioned that the government imposed a temporary ban on cat imports for business purposes only! Rameela informed the press that the government also decided to develop a four-story pet care facility in 2025, stating that the facility would offer cat-sitting services for pet owners while they were travelling.

According to the minister, there are over 4,000 stray cats in the capital city only!
