US President Joe Biden has decided to appoint Indian-American diplomat Gautam Rana as his country’s ambassador to Slovakia, amidst the Russia-Ukraine War. The White House recently issued a statement, saying that Rana would arrive in the eastern European nation soon.
Slovakia, a member of the NATO Alliance, has become increasingly important in the wake of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The NATO has already deployed troops in the landlocked Central European country. Some of the military and diplomatic observers believe that it is a significant move by the Washington DC in this context.
Rana, a US Foreign Service official, is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Algeria. He had previously held the same position at the US Embassy in Slovenia. Before serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Slovenia, the Indian-American diplomat worked at US Embassies in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates.
According to the statement issued by the White House, Rana was the Director (for Afghanistan and Pakistan) of the National Security Council and the Deputy Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in India. He also served as the Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State, Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs in the past.
Rana – who earned BA and BS Degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, a JD from the Vanderbilt University School of Law and an MA Degree from the National Defence University – can speak English, Hindi, Spanish and Gujarati.
It is to be noted that nearly 406,833 Ukrainian refugees have taken shelter in neighbouring Slovakia since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
