Image Tarnished Further
The Global Community has stood witness to Afghanistan’s recent act of granting pardon to 10 Chinese nationals, despite their alleged involvement in terrorist activities on Afghan soil! The Afghan Government has issued a statement, saying that the Chinese nationals were sent back to their country in the last week of December 2020.
According to the Statement, officials of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) had detained those foreigners in November 2020. Kabul is quite convinced that the detainees are Chinese Agents! The 10 Chinese nationals, including one lady, reportedly have close contacts with the Ministry of State Security in Beijing. The concerned Authorities in Kabul have informed the press that all the 10 foreigners have been pardoned on the condition that China would apologise for sending spies to Afghanistan.

During interrogation, two detainees admitted that they had links to the Haqqani network, an Afghan guerrilla insurgent group using asymmetric warfare to fight against US-led NATO forces and the Government of Afghanistan. According to them, a Chinese national, Xa Hung, used to run a restaurant at Shirpoor in Kabul. Earlier, the Kabul Police had recovered weapons, explosives and drugs from the residence of another Chinese national, Li Yangyang, in Kabul’s Karte Char area. Later, the Afghan authorities claimed that the Chinese nationals set up a fictitious Organisation – termed the East Turkistan Islamic Movement – in order to gather information.
Vice President of Afghanistan Amrullah Saleh made it clear to Chinese Ambassador to Kabul Wang Yu that those 10 people would be released only if China apologised for their activities. He also asked Beijing to acknowledge that China violated International Law and breached Kabul’s trust. So far, China has not issued any official statement in this regard. However, the Chinese Media covered this piece of news.

The Chinese nationals were detained in Afghanistan for 23 days before being released on December 25, 2020. A special aircraft, sent by China, took them to Beijing. The incident has damaged China’s image further at international level!
