Startup India is an initiative of the Government of India that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. Mukherjee – a young lady based in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata – recently organised a Food Festival in the northern part of the City of Joy. Talking to the Boundless Ocean of Politics on the sidelines of the event on December 21, Mukherjee said that she set up a centre a couple of years ago to teach people, mainly housewives, how to prepare cakes and other food items. She also said that she got a huge response, as a number of women joined her centre. According to the young entrepreneur, she also encourages her students to promote and market their products in Kolkata and other parts of the country.

Mukherjee claimed that the (recently-held) Food Festival allowed homemakers to directly communicate with customers and to get their feedback. She believes that the event has certainly boosted their confidence. Mukherjee further revealed that she would organise such festivals in major Indian cities in the coming years, as Indian food-lovers would get an opportunity to taste different items prepared by homemakers.
Meanwhile, the entrepreneur admitted that the housewives were facing difficulties during the three-day Festival in Kolkata. She explained that major cake shop franchises have their own facilities to preserve food items in a proper way. However, the homemakers have no such facilities. As a result, they face troubles, if they fail to sell their products in 24 hours.

At the same time, Mukherjee claimed that some of her students recently started supplying cakes and other food items to some famous franchises. She expressed hope that the success would help homemakers earn a handsome amount of money. They can set up their own facilities and properly preserve their products, if they maintain the quality, added Mukherjee.
Mukherjee’s students – who exhibited their items at the Globesyn Crystal Tower (EP Block, Sector V, Salt Lake, Kolkata) on December 19-21 – thanked their teacher for providing them with such an opportunity. It became easier for them to sell their products during the Christmas. Currently, Mukherjee and her protégés are taking part in another Food Festival at Camac Street in central part of the city.

It seems that Mukherjee’s initiative will encourage many to take full advantages of the programme launched by the Indian government and to start their own businesses.
