Former Adult Film Star Becomes Senator

Former adult film actress Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, better known by her stage name Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a new senator, causing a stir in Colombian politics. She has recently been elected as a member of the Upper House of the Parliament. After winning the Parliamentary Elections held in March 2026, she recently assumed the role of Senator in the Colombian capital of Bogotá.

Deyci, born on September 4, 1992 in Cúcuta, had been vocal about protecting the rights of adult content creators during her election campaign for the Historic Pact coalition. She won the election from the Norte de Santander region under the left-wing coalition by promising to fight for marginalised people in the Senate.

During the election campaign, Deyci advocated for adult-content creators’ labour rights, social security and legal protections, stating that they should have the right to be recognised as workers, just like any other professionals, and to receive legal protection, as well as social security. She claimed that many in this profession fall victim to discrimination, social stigma and the denial of basic workplace rights. Deyci pledged to raise her voice in the Senate to ensure clear labour policies, healthcare facilities and legal protections for them. She further pledged to enact laws regarding Women’s Rights, Freedom of Expression, Mental Health and the Protection of socially marginalised communities.

Deyci, who started her career as a journalist and writer, joined the adult content industry in 2017. She remained in the industry for approximately two years before exiting to focus mainly on political advocacy and social activism. It may be noted that another former adult film star, Juan Carlos Florián, was appointed as Colombia’s Deputy Minister of Diversity in February 2025 and subsequently elevated to Minister of Equality and Equity in August 2025 by President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego.

As expected, the appointment of Florián sparked controversy within Petro’s Cabinet. The Opposition parties alleged that such appointments could tarnish the image of the government. However, the Petro Government rejected the allegation, saying that not a person’s past occupation, but rather his qualifications, skills and public service ability should be the main consideration in the discharge of public duties.

Deyci, too, remained defiant against conservative critics who argued that her past disqualified her from public office. She reminded her critics that Ilona Staller (Cicciolina) successfully transitioned from the adult entertainment industry to serve in the Italian Parliament. On social media, she wrote: “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office? The problem is that society consumes adult films but denies us the possibility of speaking in spaces of power. My experience allowed me to understand inequality, the struggle for freedom and the popular economy.

According to Deyci, it is the state’s failure to safeguard this sector from “misinformation, prejudice and double standards“, leaving thousands of women vulnerable to severe economic and physical exploitation by unregulated studios and digital platforms.
