German Chancellor Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz has warned US President Donald John Trump not to interfere in his country’s upcoming election. He also sent a message to the US-friendly political outfits in his own country, stating: “Under the German Political Parties Act (Parteiengesetz), donations from outside the European Union (EU) are generally prohibited, with specific limited exceptions for EU citizens or German expatriates.” The Provincial Elections for both Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled for September 2026.

Following President Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) slogan, the US State Department recently announced a foreign assistance programme offering grants of up to USD 3 million to European organisations and initiatives. The funding aims to boost civil society groups and think-tanks that align with the US President’s MAGA ideology and promote “civilisational bonds” with the US. The grants are designed to support European groups pushing for socially conservative and MAGA-style political policies, representing a significant shift in US soft power and public diplomacy across Europe.

Following the State Department‘s announcement, the Trump Administration has allegedly started making an attempt to directly influence European politics. Chancellor Merz, the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Federal Coalition alongside their Bavarian coalition partners the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), stated: “I do not want the US Government or institutions close to it to interfere in German elections.“

According to political analysts, the US programme, called Developing Civilisational Bonds, Democratic Resilience and Rule of Law in Europe, could benefit groups such as those ideologically aligned with far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Merz stressed that if a far-right party formed a government in Germany, it would have “a completely different significance” than if such a development occurred in another EU country, given Germany’s history. “I will do everything in my power in Germany to prevent that from happening,” he added.

Speaking at a press conference, the Chancellor said: “I am and remain convinced that we will, in the three Federated States, especially in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, prevent the AfD from obtaining a majority of seats in the respective regional Parliaments, and I will keep this optimism until 6pm on election night.”

Meanwhile, Merz claimed that his government found its rhythm and delivered, noting good cooperation with its partners, the Social Democrats. He further claimed that his administration restored a more active role for Germany in Europe. At the same time, the Chancellor acknowledged that significant challenges still remained.
