Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu has claimed that the assassination of Supreme Iranian Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei would end the ongoing conflict between the two West Asian nations! However, he did not clarify whether the Zionist Regime had any plan to eliminate the Ayatollah.

The top US officials recently informed Reuters that Israel plotted to assassinate the supreme religious leader of Iran. However, US President Donald John Trump strongly opposed the move, stressing that it could lead to further escalation of the conflict. However, Netanyahu rejected the US President’s view, stating: “It’s not going to escalate the conflict, it’s going to end the conflict.” He told ABC News: “We’ve had half a century of conflict spread by this regime that terrorises everyone in the Middle East; has bombed the Aramco oil fields in Saudi Arabia; is spreading terrorism and subversion and sabotage everywhere.” Netanyahu added: “The ‘forever war’ is what Iran wants, and they’re bringing us to the brink of nuclear war. In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, bringing an end to this aggression, and we can only do so by standing up to the forces of evil.“

Asked whether his Armed Forces would target the supreme leader of Iran, Netanyahu said that Israel was “doing what we need to do“. He also claimed that Tel Aviv eliminated at least nine top Iranian nuclear scientists, saying: “I’m not going to get into the details, but we’ve targeted their top nuclear scientists. It’s basically Hitler’s nuclear team.“

The US officials claimed on June 15, 2025 that Israel informed the US that it got an opportunity to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei. Initially, Netanyahu denied such a claim, stating that he did not discuss this issue with Washington DC. He also advised people not to get influenced by “fake news”. At the same time, the Israeli Prime Minister hinted that a regime change in Iran “could certainly be the result” of Tel Aviv’s ongoing military campaign, codenamed Operation Rising Lion, against the Islamic Republic. He also said that although the President is the official Head of State of Iran, the Supreme Religious Leader runs the hardline country in reality. With this statement, Netanyahu has made it clear that his target is not President Masoud Pezeshkian, but Ayatollah Khamenei.

Meanwhile, Iran International has reported that Ayatollah Khamenei, along with his son Mojtaba and other family members, has taken shelter in a bunker in northeast Tehran. According to sources close to the Government of Iran, the bunker is situated in Lavizān, a north-eastern neighbourhood of the capital city.

It may be noted that the Supreme Leader had taken refuge in the bunker when Iran attacked Israel in April and October 2024. His family was with him at that period of time, too. According to the Israeli media, the Netanyahu Administration issued a veiled warning to Ayatollah Khamenei by targeting Mashhad, a city in northeast Iran, on June 15, 2025. Mashhad is widely considered as the spiritual capital of Iran.
