Putin Ready To Compromise With Kiev, But…
Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has hinted that he is ready to compromise with Ukraine without any conditions! The Russian strongman recently gave such an assurance to his friend Donald John Trump.
The Russian President participates in a question-and-answer session on State Television every year. On December 19, 2024, Putin held a four-hour televised annual question-and-answer session during which he said that he was ready to meet US President-elect Trump. When asked what he would discuss with Trump, the President replied: “Ukraine!” He stressed: “Politics is the art of compromise. We have always said that we are ready for both talks and compromises.” Putin added: “Soon, those Ukrainians who want to fight will run out, in my opinion, soon there will be no one left who wants to fight. We are ready, but the other side needs to be ready for both negotiations and compromises.”

President Putin made clear that he would not set any conditions for talks with the Ukrainian Government. However, he had told Kiev in November 2024 that Moscow would not cede the occupied land. At the same time, Ukraine would not be allowed to join NATO.
Meanwhile, Putin stressed on a long-lasting peace deal with Kiev, stating that he was not in favour of a temporary truce. He recalled that Moscow and Kiev had reached a preliminary agreement in the early weeks of the war during a meeting between the two parties in Istanbul. However, Kiev never implemented the agreement. It may be noted that the Ukrainian politicians had claimed that the draft deal would have neutered the military, as well as political, ambitions of Kiev.
Earlier, the Russian President had also mentioned that Moscow would sign a deal only with legitimate authorities (read the Ukrainian Parliament) in Kiev. The Kremlin does not consider Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy as legitimate authority, as his term has technically expired. Zelenskyy has delayed a Presidential Election only because of the ongoing war. He needs to be re-elected for Moscow to consider him a legitimate signatory to any deal, stated Putin.
Political analysts have opined that the Russian President has softened his stand on Ukraine because of Donald Trump. While campaigning for the 2024 US Presidential Elections, Trump had claimed that he would end the Russia-Ukraine War, if he came to power. The US President-elect is called a self-proclaimed master of striking any deal. He had penned a book, titled ‘Trump: The Art of the Deal’, in 1987. Hence, analysts consider both the message of Trump and Putin’s assurance as quite significant.
