Balochistan, the largest province of Pakistan by land area but the least populated one, reportedly declared itself an independent country on July 14, 2026. As per a letter issued in the name of the Republic of Balochistan, the Balochistan Army took control of 85% of the territory, apart from adopting a national flag, national anthem, new currency and an independent administrative system.

The letter, widely circulated on social media, mentioned that the new administration assumed full control over the mineral resources, gas fields and coal mines in the region. It added that a huge number of personnel from the Pakistani security agencies resigned to join the Balochistan side.

It may be noted that the southwestern region of the South Asian country has witnessed prolonged unrest and repeated protests against Pakistan, with demonstrators frequently raising slogans against Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah and Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. In recent times, ethnic Baloch insurgents and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants have targeted the Pakistani security forces.

According to the local media, 109 militants have been killed, including 71 during Operation Shaban – a joint operation carried out by the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps (FC) and Balochistan Police. since July 5, 2026. Hence, the regional political situation has changed significantly. The latest claim of independence, if true, deals a fresh setback to Islamabad.

Meanwhile, the claims made in the viral letter have not been officially verified. Reports suggest that no recognised international organisation or sovereign government has recognised Balochistan as an independent state.
