Discovery Of Ancient Ship On Mediterranean Seabed

The wreckage, lying in the bed of the Mediterranean Sea, of a 3,300-year-old ship has recently been found 90km from the coast of northern Israel. A robot, and not human beings, discovered the ship in the last week of May 2024!

Reports suggest that the ship was found 1.8km below the sea. According to experts, the 3,300-year-old ship is the oldest known vessel so far. However, the wreckage still lies neatly on the seabed!

An Israeli company was searching for oil under the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in May (2024). The company officials sent a robot to gather underwater information. By a stroke of luck, the robot discovered the wreckage!

Watch: 3,300-year-old ship and its cargo discovered

Experts are of the opinion that the late Bronze Age ship might have sunk for two reasons. It might have been attacked by pirates or sunk due to a heavy storm. This 12-14mt-long ancient cargo ship used to transport oil, wine or fruit. Researchers found a special type of jar, called Amphora, in the wreckage.

Amphora is a type of container with a pointed bottom, and characteristic shape and size that fit tightly against each other in storage rooms and packages, tied together with rope and delivered by land or sea. The size and shape of an amphora have been determined from at least as early as the Neolithic Period. Amphoras were used in ancient Greece mainly to store wine, milk or grain. This type of jars had one handle each on two sides.

Further research on the submerged vessel is underway.
