Ignoring the strict rules and regulations, a large number of people try to enter the US from different countries in Central and South America every day! They often arrive in the US by hiding in potato-laden trucks or in freezers full of raw meat or by swimming across the sea or by scaling the border fences made of barbed wire! For many, the dream of finding a shelter in a new country ends midway as they unfortunately die in cargo trucks or drown in the sea. Those who do eventually enter the US enjoy the status of Illegal Immigrants.

President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr signed a new Executive Order on immigrant-welfare on June 19, 2024. As per the Order, those who are married to US citizens, but remain undocumented immigrants, shall no longer be deported. They can live permanently in the US and also apply for citizenship. They can even apply for a job after spending a decade in the US. Around 0.49 million people are expected to benefit from this project. A large portion of the US’ Spanish-speaking immigrants are happy with this initiative. “We can live with self-respect now as we have the paperwork,” said Maria, the wife of a Fulton County School janitor.

All the US Governments, be it run by Biden or his predecessors, are well aware of the fact that no Great Wall is capable of stopping the inexorable influx of immigrants. After entering the US, the illegal immigrants try to form a different society in order to live in their own way. Some of these immigrants often try to secure their social status by tying nuptial knots with the US citizens. However, marriage does not in any way guarantee citizenship since they have entered the country illegally. Children of illegal immigrant parents, too, face various problems. A school in Fulton County had to close a classroom during the Presidency of Donald Trump because the immigrant children of that area did not have permanent residency.

There is no doubt that the immigrants bear the brunt of unemployment, and often are forced to take up blue collared jobs, i.e. low wage jobs. Information Technology (IT) employee Shubojit Roy believes that the Executive Order is a quite important humanitarian declaration in terms of Immigration Law. According to the Indian national, each and every country has its own set of morals. “The US is habituated in dealing with immigrants from the very beginning. The problems of the long-time sufferers are at least partially resolved,” stressed Roy.

Meanwhile, political analysts are of the opinion that President Biden’s sensitive immigration policy could have a negative impact on Democrats in the next Presidential Election. According to them, a number of US citizens think that most of these illegal immigrants are drug addicts and involved in criminal activities! They do not want their government to spend tax-payers’ money for taking care of the immigrants. “President Biden has lost his popularity in many states due to this hospitality,” said Henderson Martinez, a carpenter by profession.
