The Peruvian Police recently recovered a mummy from a food delivery bag, triggering a sensation in the Latin American country. The Police also arrested 26-year-old Julio Cesar Bermejo, a former food delivery man who owns the bag. Now, his mental health is being tested. Scientists are of the opinion that the newly recovered pre-Hispanic mummy is around 600-800 years old.

According to sources close to the Police, Julio used to work at Pedidos Ya, a Latin American food app. On February 25 (2023), Julio and his two friends were enjoying drinks at a park in the Peruvian city of Puno. The Police came to know from a confidential source that those men had a bag with them and a mummy was there inside it. Marco Antonio Ortega, the spokesperson (Puno region) of the National Police, said: “A 26-year-old man had a delivery bag labelled Pedidos Ya. Inside we found a mummy.”

During interrogation, Julio claimed that Juanita (the mummy remains) was his spiritual girlfriend. He told the Police: “At home, she’s in my room, she sleeps with me. I take care of her.” However, scientists have confirmed that the mummy is of an adult male. Before detaining Julio, the Police sent him to a hospital for a check up of his mental health. A senior Police officer has informed the press that Julio will remain in detention, as investigators are looking into the case.

Meanwhile, the mummy is currently in the possession of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. The Ministry has classified the mummy as a national cultural asset.

It may be noted that a number of mummies have been discovered in Peru in recent times. Archeologists had discovered a mummy, estimated to be between 800 and 1,200 years old, at a site near Lima in 2021.
