When a child is seen doing something with his left hand, s/he may often get marked by that particular society in a different manner. It may be so that many members of that society cannot take the issue in a normal way. Although many parents accept this behaviour as normal, many of them cannot accept the urges of their children of using their left hands while eating, or writing. Since 1976, the Global Community has been observing August 13 as ‘International Left Handers Day’ to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left-handers, and to make people understand that it is not an abnormality. Just as right-handed people use the left side of their brain, left-handed people use the right side of their brain.

The International Left Handers Day was observed in 1976 for the first time by Dean R Campbell, the founder of the Lefthanders International, Inc. His main motto was to stress on the fact that there were some disadvantages, as well as advantages, of being a left-hander! About 10% of the global population are left-handers. There are so many famous personalities in this list. They are, in no way, inferior or different from right-handers… but, they prefer to use their left hands, instead of the right. Albert Einstein, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, Mary Curie, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Rafael Nadal, Angelina Jolie, Lewis Carroll, Prince Williams, Oprah Winfrey… all of them are famous personalities.

It is widely believed that left-handers are more creative and intelligent than right-handers! The above mentioned list backs such claim. Studies show that the co-ordination between the right and the left side of the brain is far better in case of left-handed persons. Hence, they are more intelligent. Even, the left-handed persons are known to have better sight, or underwater vision, than the right-handers! This year, the Lefthanders International, Inc., once again, gave the message that left-handers are not at all unusual in any way, but just as normal as the right-handed people!
