Rain (Reign) Of Terror…

Well, did that trigger fireworks! It can, cursorily, be summarised by stating as visualised: vehicle halts… person walks past the entrance… sounds and a bit of sparks of firing… people falling down after the gunshots… in a nutshell, a Gunman killed 49 people, in just 17 minutes, at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15! A few days prior to it, 48 Indian soldiers were killed in a terror attack in Pulwama. These were two separate incidents in two different parts of the world… But, the link between them is a common term, ‘Terrorism’, which has become extremely common in recent times.
Occurrences of such a nature in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, France, India, East, West, i.e. everywhere else have showed that the place, time, as well as the assassins/assailants were different, almost everywhere, but the impact, almost always, has been the same!
It is being seen that in every place, a section of people is playing with the lives of innocent people. Unfortunately, the modern and civilised world has yet to succeed in tackling this global menace. As per a recently published survey, there were four cases in which more than 100 people were killed in 2018. In 2019, such incidents happened twice!
The world is facing more than a lot of problems, hunger, poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy etc… However, terrorism is now the burning issue!

The word Terrorism has its roots in the French Revolution in 1789-99, during which, as per the Oxford Dictionary, incidents pertaining to terrorism were rampant, the meaning thus written as an “unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims”! It is clear from this analysis that terrorists try to create ‘fear’ or ‘horror’ among people through violence in order to put the government and common people under pressure! ‘Acts of terrorism‘ have been used in different forms and in different perspectives at different times in the forms of bomb blasts, cyber-terrorism, sexual violence… the list would go on and on, apart from just stabs and gunshots!
Terrorism, now it is clear, mainly uses two types of masks: political and religious! In the Middle East or West Asia, ‘religious terrorism‘ has claimed the lives of many innocent Iraqis and Syrians. On the contrary, the top political leaderships in three-four South Asian countries have been into their efforts to dominate the regional geopolitics with religion. Some political leaders are seen constantly trying to communalise the politics, with the help of the ‘religious‘ or ‘spiritual leaders‘. The religious leaders would advise their followers that it is their sacred duty to kill the people of other religious groups… and the youths belonging to those groups get involved in terrorist activities, mostly due to constant brainwashing!

A question arises as to how it became possible for the Taliban, Islamic State and Boko Haram to survive in Afghanistan, Syria and Nigeria, respectively, years after year… Perhaps, it is because of our ‘religious mindset’. Many people are constantly being subjected to discrimination and abuse in different parts of the globe on the basis of their skin-colour, as well as religious practices… When the minority community in a particular region get constantly deprived of their social and economic needs and rights mainly because of their race and faith, they slowly get terribly dissatisfied. Some ‘political or religious leaders’ with vested interests get to influence members of the community in order to get their job done. This way, ‘terrorism‘ takes its birth! These leaders make the entire world a ‘dangerous place’ by spreading terrorism!
Today, countries – like India, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates – occupy the top positions in the list of arms importing nations. These nations are the victims of terrorism. There are many state and non-state actors, who harbour terrorism, and also talk about a terror-free world!

It is the time for the global community to indulge in a bit of self-introspection, it is felt! All of us can strive to make the world terror free by identifying the ‘terrorists‘ and their mindsets! All that is to be done is to isolate those terrorists by forming a public opinion against them… and that will be the beginning of the end of terrorism!
