The Chairman & The Prophet
It seems that China is gearing up for another Cultural Revolution, as the Asian giant plans to launch a five-year plan in order to introduce the Chinese version of Islam! The Xi Jinping government in Beijing has confirmed that the proposed move is aimed at bridging the gap between Islam and the Chinese culture. In other words, the neo-Islam will be influenced by the socialist ideology.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing a couple of days ago, a senior Chinese official said that the government made a final decision in this regard after discussing the issue with eight Islamic organisations that are active in the Asian country. More than 20 million Muslims live in China and most of them belong to Uyghur community. The maximum number of Muslims lives primarily in Xinjiang Province, as Islam is one of the five main religions recognised by the State.
The Chinese government believes that the Uyghur community is highly influenced by separatist and extremist ideologies. So, Beijing has decided to make the proposed move in an attempt to bring this community to the mainstream. It has become important for the top political leadership in Beijing to influence the Muslim community with socialist ideas. Earlier, the Chinese authorities triggered a controversy by imposing a ban on abnormal facial hair (beard) and also on wearing veils. It is to be noted that both are typically Muslim customs in the remote Xinjiang region.
In a separate development, President Xi Jinping warned the Chinese Army to be prepared for a big battle. In the first week of January, the president said in Beijing that some major changes have taken place in the world in recent times and the Army should be fully prepared to face any untoward situation! During a meeting with top Army officers, Xi stressed: “All military units must correctly understand major national security and development trends, and strengthen their sense of unexpected hardship, crisis and battle.” He further said: “The Armed Forces must prepare for a comprehensive military struggle from a new starting point. Preparation for war and combat must be deepened to ensure an efficient response in times of emergency.”
Interestingly, President Xi held the meeting with the Army officers after newly appointed US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan strongly criticised the Socialist nation for adopting aggressive foreign policies. Shanahan told senior Pentagon officials that China should be the main target of the US military activities! Foreign policy experts believe that President Xi’s advice to the Chinese forces is significant, as he indicates that Beijing is ready to counter Washington in 2019!
