Pakistan believes that the tension between Islamabad and New Delhi can trigger a nuclear war in South Asia.
Pakistan’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Lieutenant General (Retired) Nasser Khan Janjua has opined that the regional security stands on an extremely fine balance. As a result, no one can deny the possibility of nuclear war, he mentioned earlier this week.
Janjua not only targeted India, but did also criticise the US’ policies towards China and Pakistan. He claimed that America joined hands with India only to counter China in the region. According to the NSA, it’s unfortunate that President Donald Trump decided to ignore Islamabad, despite knowing the fact that “Pakistan has paid a heavy price in its fight against terrorism”. “The world never recognised its losses,” stressed Janjua. He said: “ Forces of the Taliban are regaining territory in Afghanistan which is a vital sign of US strategy failure, and the American government is blaming Pakistan for its failure in Afghanistan.”

Soon after the NSA expressed the view while speaking at an event in Islamabad, the US administration raised questions about Pakistan’s laxity in fighting terrorism. President Trump clearly mentioned in his new ‘Afghanistan strategy’ that Washington was ready to maintain close ties with Islamabad, but the Pakistani government would have to take necessary actions against terrorists. The president claimed that Islamabad has received nearly USD 33 billion from the US since the 9/11 terror attacks, stating: “We will press Pakistan to intensify its counter-terrorism efforts, since no partnership can survive a country’s support for militants and terrorists who target a partner’s own service members and officials.”

Meanwhile, the NSA described China as Pakistan’s ‘all-weather’ friend while criticising the American foreign policy. Janjua further accused the US of disrupting the balance of power in South Asia only because of its rivalry with China and Russia. “As part of its (US) policy to counter Chinese influence in South Asia, the US is conspiring against China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) along with the Indians,” he said, advising Washington not to follow the ‘Indian policy’ on regional issues.
