India Asked Not To Fall Into US, Japan’s ‘Trap’
China has advised neighbouring India not to fall into the trap of the US and Japan.
Spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying recently said that it would be important for India to understand the current global geopolitical landscape before making any changes in its foreign policy. She expressed serious concern over Washington and Tokyo’s plan to use India to contain China, saying that such a move would cause problems for New Delhi in the coming days.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing over the weekend, the spokesperson said that China was well aware of the US and Japan’s intension and would never allow India to make strategic gains by accepting their offer. “Once India falls into their trap, the country will become a pawn for the US and Japan, and will lose numerous opportunities while facing more risks,” she stressed.
According to Hua, India, which considers itself as a major power, should not rely on external forces for its security. Instead, the South Asian country should be more open to its neighbours, she told the press. Hua further urged India to join regional development programmes, such as the Silk Road project, initiated by Beijing.
As far as the Asia-Pacific security pattern is concerned, the senior Chinese official said that America’s decision to increase its military presence in the region created tension in Asia, and Japan and India would soon feel the heat. She made the comment after Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj assured US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that New Delhi would bolster defence and security co-operation with Washington.
Hua believes that India’s failure to compete with China in different fields has prompted the top Indian political leadership to accept America’s offer. “With the enlarging gap in its competition with China, New Delhi seems to be increasingly wary of Beijing’s development. With Chinese railways, ports and hydroelectric projects extending to India’s periphery, the country is haunted by its self-surmised ‘China’s besiegement’,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi government in India has made clear that New Delhi will never allow Beijing to increase its influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). In a statement issued on March 18, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that China’s “aggressive” foreign policy is aimed at destabilising the region. The Asian giant is trying to corner India in its own backyard only to make strategic gains, added the MEA.
A senior Indian ministry official said it is unfortunate that China, which plans to co-produce ballistic missiles and advanced military aircraft with Pakistan, advised India not to rely on external forces for its security. According to the official who wished to remain anonymous, it is a dichotomy. He slammed the Chinese Foreign Ministry for claiming that Beijing was not aware of any missile co-operation agreement with Islamabad, saying that China was trying to disturb the strategic balance and stability in South Asia by joining hands with Pakistan.
Indian foreign policy experts are of the opinion that China’s decision to strengthen defence co-operation with Pakistan has encouraged India to train Vietnamese soldiers in jungle warfare. Although training Army officers of a friendly partner-nation is not uncommon, India is doing so as a part of its strategy to maintain “friendly” ties with South and South-East Asian countries in order to “neutralise” China’s aggressive policy. Indian journalist Indrani Bagchi believes that India cannot be a second “Mongolia”. She stressed that India’s “China strategy” must apply Chinese dictum “build your strength, bide your time”.
The growing conflicts of interest between India and China have triggered a diplomatic war between the two countries and it seems that the war will go on.
