UK Couple Stunned After Opening Century-Old Can

A couple was stunned to find a massive amount of cash hidden in a container at their 100-year-old home. The incident recently took place in Sheffield, the UK. The couple stated that the money (more than GBP 1,000) was recovered from an old paint container kept at their home.

According to an article published by Newsweek, Luisa (34) and her husband Dan live in a house built before the year 1900. They recently became curious upon seeing a space sealed off with bricks beneath the staircase leading to the basement and decided to investigate what had been hidden there for years.

The couple informed Newsweek that they found a few pieces of coal and an old container of paint there. A pungent, ammonia-like odour was emanating from that container. Unsure of what was inside, the couple did not touch it for several months. Finally, they mustered the courage to open the container and decided to capture the moment on camera.

Luisa and Dan were stunned as soon as they opened the lid of the container as they found several bundles of banknotes from the 1970s inside it. Luisa stressed that they had never even imagined such a huge amount of money could be found inside their home, describing it as an unforgettable experience.

Luisa told Newsweek: “None of us were expecting money inside. It was such a fantastic memory for the kids, they will remember it forever.” She said that they “couldn’t have found it at a better time” as she was temporarily out of work because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. “It was nice to treat the kids a bit and catch up on any bills. It took some stress off us for a few weeks,” stressed Luisa.

As expected, the incident has created a buzz in the UK. A social media user has pointed out that it is still possible to go to a bank and exchange banknotes bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Some have suggested that the couple should have verified whether the notes possessed any special characteristics or were rare, as they could have obtained a much higher price for the old currency from collectors.
