Getting Younger By A Decade!
If one spends 100 days under the sea, the age of that person will decrease by 10 years! Even living underwater decreases cholesterol levels in the body and lengthens chromosomes, thus ensuring longevity! This claim, made by more than just one scientist, has triggered quite a sensation!
Scientists are always intrigued by and excited to know about what is out there beyond the horizon or at the bottom of the sea! Hence, they often carry out weird experiments. Although those experiments seem weird, their outcomes often reveal stunning findings. Project NEPTUNE 100 is one such experiment. Dr Joseph Dituri, a US citizen, played an important part in this study. In 2023, he spent 100 days submerged at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo during the Project NEPTUNE 100 mission, conducting groundbreaking medical and marine science research and setting a record for underwater human habitation at ambient pressure! Dr Dituri claimed that his stay at a sub-sea hotel suite lying 30ft beneath the Atlantic Ocean changed his Life Cycle!

Now, Dr Dituri is now known as Dr Deep Sea. After serving the US Navy, he obtained his PhD and got himself involved in various experiments! The special vessel in which he spent more than three months under the sea looked like a small hotel room, having a fridge, a comfortable bed and other items. Also, there was enough food for Dr Dituri. He used to stay beneath the sea (in that submarine) several times a day! The main objectives of the project were to find human endurance in an isolated and confined environment and to observe the changes in the body under high pressure.
Researchers have started studying meticulously Dr Dituri’s first 93 days under the Atlantic Ocean. They are concentrating mainly on changes occurred in his body after coming out of water. Researchers are more than surprised to see Dr Dituri’s medical reports. It is evident in those medical reports that the age of the telomeres of his chromosomes increased a lot! Telomeres are the specific DNA-protein structures found at both ends of each chromosome. Usually, the length of telomeres decreases with age. However, just the opposite happened with Dr Dituri. The length of the telomeres in his chromosomes increased by 20%, after he spent days under the sea. Researchers have claimed that his age decreased by at least 10 years!

Dr Dituri’s body underwent some changes, too. His stem cell count increased during his stay beneath the ocean! Stem cells are a special type of cells that have two important properties. They are able to make more cells like themselves. In other words, they self-renew and can become other cells that do different things in a process known as differentiation. Stem cells are found in almost all tissues of the body. Furthermore, Dr Dituri’s cholesterol level dropped to 72 and sleep cycle got markedly improved. With this, there was an overall improvement in his physical, as well as mental, condition.
Many are of the opinion that Dr Dituri’s experience has opened new avenues as far as research on aging is concerned. Research is also underway to find how certain environments can slow or even reverse the aging process in the human body. According to some scientists, Dr Dituri’s experience also points the way to combat various aging-related diseases. They believe that the experiment would show a ray of hope in the advancement of medicine.
Dr Dituri performed a number of experiments with himself in the past. He once set a record by spending 73 days underwater! This time, he broke his own record. Fifty-six-year-old Dr Dituri thinks that everyone should spend at least two weeks under high pressure conditions (under water)! He has also explained the benefits of being isolated from everyone.
