The Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities has triggered a fresh controversy in Europe, stating in its latest report that Britain has set an example for other White-dominated nations as far as fight against Racism is concerned. The 258-page Report of the Commission, set up by Prime Minister Boris Johnson following Black Lives Matter protests in Britain, stated: “Put simply we no longer see a Britain where the system is deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities.” Immediately after the publication of the Report, Anti-apartheid activists have strongly criticised the Commission, supported by the Race Disparity Unit in the Cabinet Office, for hiding the facts… they are of the opinion that the Report is extremely insulting to Blacks and Non-White Minorities in the UK.

As expected, PM Johnson has welcomed the Report, stressing that Britain will never tolerate Racism! Meanwhile, the activists have termed the Report baseless and hugely disappointing, as they believe that the Johnson Administration is trying hard to safeguard its image especially after a surge in number of incidents related to Racial Discrimination in the UK during the COVID-19 Pandemic. They further claimed that the Pandemic claimed more Black lives than Whites in 2020, hence, racial discrimination, in a way, still exists in Britain…

Tony Sewell, the Chairperson of the Committee, has tried to defend the Report, saying: “We no longer see a Britain where the system is deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities. The impediments and disparities do exist, but they were varied and ironically very few of them are directly to do with racism.” It is a fact that the Report did not completely rule out the existence of Racism in Britain by stating that the situation in Britain was much better than other countries dominated by Whites. In that context, it has been claimed that Britain can be easily called a Model!

Earlier, Munira Mirza – a British Political Adviser, close aide of PM Johnson and the Director of the Policy Unit of Number 10, Downing Street – had selected members of this Commission. She had also claimed that Racism did not exist in Britain. Activists have opined that the Report is a false one, with members of the Commission trying to establish Mirza’s claim as a fact.

According to Political Experts, the Report has been published a month after Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, claimed that she and her husband Prince Harry had left the Buckingham Palace after she became a victim of Racism. While appearing in an interview with renowned American talk show host Oprah Winfrey, she had mentioned that some members of the Royal Family had resorted to discussions about how dark the colour of the skin of her baby might be! Experts believe that the Johnson Administration is making a serious attempt to save the face of the Royal Family through this Report!
